Distinguish between your obligations and impositions
"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them."
- Epictetus.
In life we are surrounded by things that we feel we are obliged to do. Whether it's a work task, meeting a new girl/boy, scoring a goal because you're the top scorer, getting that submission during a BJJ comp...etc. We all feel like we are obliged to do these things. Is it our obligation or is it simply an imposition upon ourselves?
When examining the term obligation, it can be defined as such;
ob•li•ga•tion ŏb″lĭ-gā′shən
n. A social, legal, or moral requirement, such as a duty, contract, or promise, that compels one to follow or avoid a particular course of action.
n. The constraining power of a promise, contract, law, or sense of duty.
What does this definition truly mean?
For example, when a person says, "I was obliged to do it." This means that the individual had no choice. In life, a lot of the times we feel that we have no choice and we call this being obliged to something, society has made people feel that employment contracts are your contractual obligations however, this is far from reality. Your employment contract is the imposition that is placed upon your agreement of task not your obligation as a human being. When you research "what is obligation?" you will read many articles online that will bring up an employment contract. The Merriam-Webster definition above also makes this mistake. This is not obligation, this is an imposition that you have agreed to be placed upon yourself.
What is Imposition?
The word Imposition is defined as;
im•po•si•tion ĭm″pə-zĭsh′ən
n. The act of imposing or the condition of being imposed.
n. Something imposed, such as a tax, an undue burden, or a fraud.
n. A burdensome or unfair demand, as upon someone's time.
When you Google the word 'imposition' this is all you get. Definitions from dictionary.com , merriam-webster.com , collinsdictionary.com , dictionay.cambridge.org ... etc. You don't get any articles breaking down the understanding of imposition or the philosophical break down of imposition, you just get the plain definition. So I'm here to tell you that imposition IS your employment contract, this is not your obligation.
Your obligation is to your duty.
WHAT IS YOUR DUTY?
Your duty is the moral sense of accomplishment, to the nature of your being.
Your obligation is to acquire your duty and protect it at all costs.
Duty of a Man: Purpose.
Duty of a Woman: Nurture.
